"Follow Me" by French singer Amanda Lear release in 1978 became a multi-million selling success across Continental Europe and remains on of Amanda's trademark hits. The lyrics were written by Lear and the music was composed by Anthony Monn, her long-time producer and collaborator.
Musically, "Follow Me" showcased the mainstream disco sound, which in the second half of the 1970s was at it's peak, the symphonic elements, were inspired by the innovatory work of the German band 'Kraftwerk'.
Lyrically, the song tells a story about a girl temped by the Devil. An atternative version of the song, billed as "Follow Me" (Reprise) has different lyrics the sees the girl reject the Devil's offers.
Allegations claiming that Lear was a drag queen or intersex circulated from the beginning of Lear's modelling and singing careers. Her alleged transgender background was commented on by Salvador Dali himself, and remarked upon in the media and in the biographies of those who knew Lear earlier in her life, including Dali. Some sources claim that Dali invented the stage name for her, a pun of the Catalan language "L'Amant de Dali" (Dali's lover)
Despite Lear contradicting transgender allegations on numerous occasions and explaining they were part of a strategy to draw public attention , the allegations continued to persist in 1976. Lear stated that it was "a crazy idea from some journalist", and later claimed the rumour was started by Deli or even herself!!
