When vision meets mastery: Sophia Chunn gets into the alchemy of book cover design

Описание: In publishing, there’s often talk about the weight of words, but the face of one’s book is arguably the elephant on every indie author’s desk. For this episode of Golden Creatives Talk, I sat down with the woman who quite literally saved me from myself: Sophia Chunn.


Sophia is a North Carolina-based multidimensional designer whose credentials include publishing’s heavy-hitters like Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan. But for Brown Beyond Borders: Emerging Into Golden Multidimensionality, she was so much more than her pedigree. She was the creative who could capture my memoir in a graphic—that could be as impactful as a thumbnail or as a paperback book.


Getting out of places I don’t belong


I’ll be the first to admit it: I tried to design my own cover on Canva. I’m not terrible at designing things for my socials. But I felt that designing my own book cover was an entirely different beast!


It was a struggle. I realized I needed someone who didn’t just have technical skill, but a real connection to experiences of othering.

Sophia is currently preparing for a well-earned “refill of her cup,” taking a break from new projects to ensure she can continue giving creatively to the work she loves. It is a vital reminder for all of us that self-care is a core task of the creative process.
