As Russia and China continue to invest heavily in submarine technology, Nato forces are stepping up their efforts beneath the waves. Exercise Dynamic Manta, Nato’s premier anti-submarine warfare drill, brings together ships, submarines, aircraft and helicopters from across the Alliance to sharpen their ability to detect and track some of the world’s most advanced submarines.
Taking place off the coast of Sicily with Mount Etna in the background, the exercise highlights just how complex anti-submarine warfare really is. Detecting a submarine in the vast ocean has often been compared to finding a needle in a haystack, relying on advanced sonar systems, intelligence and coordinated operations between ships, aircraft and helicopters.
