Italy: At Taranto, FS Trenitalia Class D445 diesel and E401 electric locomotives are seen on InterCity passenger trains.
Diesel D445 1056 is seen waiting to depart on train IC558, the 0811 from Taranto to Reggio di Calabria Centrale and electric E401 036 is seen departing on train IC700, the 0801 from Taranto to Roma Termini. Clip recorded 6th October 2019.

The E.401 locomotives are a group of locomotives of the Italian State Railways used for towing composition trains blocked mainly in InterCity Day and InterCity Night services.
In 2013 a tender was announced for the transformation of the entire E.402A group , except for the prototypes already set aside, in monocabina locomotives, with replacement of the electronic drives for the towing of InterCity trains, which from the end of 2016 received the new coloring schemes "InterCity Day" and "InterCity Night".
The modification was carried out for the mechanical and carpentry part at the OGRs in Foligno , while for the electronic part at the Spanish company CAF, which was assigned the damaged unit 013, followed by the specimens 015, as the first machine to be processed. 026, 022 and 016.
After a long series of trial runs conducted on the Velim circuit, on January 19, 2017 , unit 013 was tested on the national railway network, especially on the section between the cities of Orte and Terni, obtaining in fact good results, so much so that in December this unit entered into actual service next to the 026, the group's first machine to tow InterCity trains following UIC-Z1 carriages.

The Class D.445 is a class of diesel locomotives used by the Italian Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) railway company and by Trenord. 150 units were built between 1974 and 1988, divided into three series.
The D.445 represented an evolution of the FS Class D.443 locomotive, maintaining the predecessor's reliability and operational capabilities. At the beginning of the 1970s FS, during a plan aimed at the expansion and modernization of current service. The first series of locomotives, introduced from 1974, were built with curved front windscreens which would be later replaced by cheaper and sturdier flat ones.
In 1979 a second series was ordered, fitted with the Italian standard 78 wire control equipment for use with driving carriages. At the end of the 1980s the whole group consisted of 150 units which allowed the retirement of the then old D.341 and D.342 locomotives.

Regional trains stop at more stations than other long-distance trains, and some stop at all stations. Regionale veloce (fast regional train) are trains stopping at about half of stations.
Long-distance trains are of mainly of two types: the Frecce (arrows) and Intercity trains.
Intercity trains also serve medium-sized cities besides the big cities, thus are generally slower but are cheaper than the Frecce.
Night trains (Intercity night) operate mainly between north and south of Italy and between Italy and its neighbouring countries and are comparable to Intercity level.
