Full Story:
A star studded 21st amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala was held on Thursday at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes.
The high profile event has a reputation as the one of the most glamorous nights in the Cannes Film Festival calendar and attracts stars from across the arts, this year including singer Justin Bieber, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton and Oscar winning actress Marion Cotillard.
Founded in 1985, amfAR is one of the world's leading non profit organisations dedicated to ending AIDS through research.
Speaking to Reuters on her way down the grey carpet amFAR Global Fundraising Chairwoman Sharon Stone said they are working towards a cure for adults and hope a vaccine will be available by 2020.
Stone also returns in her role as auctioneer, a favourite element of the annual high profile event. In the past the live auction has featured items such as a trip to space with Leonardo DiCaprio and a kiss from George Clooney. This year a piece of work from artist Damien Hirst is on offer.
American actress Jessica Chastain, who is in Cannes to present 'The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby' in the Un Certain Regard competition joked that she has no chance of taking home any of the auction goodies.
"I mean last year I wanted to bid on so much, I can't even compete in this room, I wish my cheque book was ready but there's not there's some high players in there, I could do a first bid on something but I am easily gonna get out maxed," she said.
Actor Abhishek Bachchan and his actress wife Aishwarya Rai Bahchcan were on hand to host the amfAR gala dinner and said next year they hoped there would be more entries from India at Cannes Film Festival.
"I think any film festival is important to any film fraternity around the world. Movie industries around the world come together under a common umbrella and showcase their talent and their work and I think Cannes represents not only glamour but also a representation of great work done by creative minds all over the world and I think it's important and hopefully next year we'll have some more enteries from India as well. Any film festival is welcome and is a great stage and a platform to showcase your talent," said Bachchan.
Actor John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston were also at the event. Travolta starred in director Quentin Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction', a special screening of which is due to take place on Friday, marking 20 years since it took the Palme d'Or. Travolta said winning the award set the film on the right path.
"I think it out us on the map for the Oscars I really do I think it was the first step, that and the New York Film Festival I think those two were the signatures of promise of what was to be," he said.
After starring in Roman Polanski's The Pianist, actor Adrien Brody also knows what it's like to be in Palme d'Or winning filming, after it scooped the prize in 2002. He said having a film in competition in Cannes 'creates awareness' and allows films to be seen by industry decision makers.
The arrivals culminate in an auction which raises money for AIDS research.
