On Tuesday, July 29, the Supreme Court of India stated it would intervene if there is credible evidence of mass voter exclusion during the ongoing revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.
A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi is hearing petitions challenging the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the poll-bound state.
Petitioners, including RJD MP Manoj Jha and civil society groups, argue that up to 65 lakh eligible voters may be left out due to procedural lapses or errors. Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Prashant Bhushan presented these concerns before the court.
The Election Commission has responded, stating that the individuals in question have either passed away or permanently relocated, and clarified that excluded voters can reapply for inclusion.
