According to Balochistan Online, on May 28, 1998 (7 Khordad 1377), Pakistan joined the world's nuclear powers by conducting its first nuclear test in the Chaghi mountain range of Balochistan. But behind this show of power, a human and environmental disaster was hidden, which the Baloch people are still struggling with.

Referring to this anniversary, Baloch political activist Omar Baloch said: "Pakistan turned Balochistan into a nuclear laboratory and made the lives and fate of the Baloch people victims of its military ambitions." He emphasizes that this crime has never been repaid and the governments of Iran and Pakistan still use tools such as extremist groups to silence the struggles of the Baloch nation today.

The Pakistani government, without informing the local people, chose Chaghi for underground explosions; an action that was a clear sign of disregard for the rights of the Baloch people. After these tests, diseases such as cancer, birth defects and infertility increased in the region and natural resources were contaminated, but the Pakistani government denied any investigation or responsibility.

Pakistan considers this day as “Youm Takbir” and a symbol of national pride, without mentioning the Baloch victims. Just two days after the first test, a second explosion was carried out in Kharan, Balochistan, without considering the catastrophic consequences of the first explosion; a sign of a systematic policy of neglect of the Baloch people.

After more than two decades, no investigation or compensation has been carried out for the victims. The international community and human rights organizations must pressure Pakistan to be accountable, clean up the environment and compensate for the damages. Now is the time to break the silence and let the voices of the Baloch victims be heard by the world.
