It stops forward momentum, forces you to rebuild the terrain and, in terms of a difficulty spike, can become somewhat annoying. While games as a whole need some challenge to push the player and death isn't going to go away, some games take the opportunity to make that state of failure, that end-game screen, a part of making you feel really helpless, sad, and even a sense of utter failure.

For this video I explored the Super Nintendo catalog, looking for the most disturbing, dramatic and depressing game over screens. Don't watch this video if you are at an emotional low point!
