Training your dog to play fetch is an essential part of being a dog owner. This is because it’s a great activity to get rid of energy and what’s the dog have fun playing a game.
Some short tips below:
• Keep the distance short, 15ft is enough for starters
• Have two of the same item, when the dog brings you one, throw the next one.
• Train "give that to me" before incorporating it into retrieving.
• Always reward the dog for giving you the object
If the dog is not bringing you the toy try to be more animated and clap to get the dogs attention
NOW How you teach a dog fetch depends on where their issue is. dog will chase and grab, but not return? you might have a rules problem. Start with 2 ball.
If a dog will grab and hold, but not chase, you probably have a motivation problem. If the dog will play tug enthusiastically, start with tug and backchain to fetch. If the dog won't tug either, maybe fetch isn't his game.
You have to start a little smaller. I own a Belgian Malinois, and at first he had zero interest in a ball, a tug or anything I threw..... you should see him now ;)
Long version of tips:
First: sit on the floor and just play with the ball/tug/toy etc. Make it look like it’s the coolest thing in the world. Tease him a little with the toy. If he try’s to grab it, let him miss a few time before you give it to him.
Second: when your dog finally gets a grip on the toy, let him have it for a brief moment, then take the toy away from him play with the toy by your self quickly then give it right back to the dog so he can have fun with it. That way he learns just because you take the toy back the fun isn’t over.
The idea here is to try and build a drive for the possession of the toy. If you think the toy is awesome, the dog should eventually want to have a go.
One you see that you dog is engaged with the toy, stop giving him the toy directly drop it by your side and he should pick it up and engage you to take it away/play. Once you have that result, you can start tossing your toy a foot away, once he returns to engage you... try 3 feet and keep slowly building distance.
