Описание: Traigh Mhòr and Traigh Eais are two incredible beaches on Eoligary peninsula on Isle of Barra, small island of Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Traigh Mhòr (eng. The Big Beach) lies on the eastern side of the narrow isthmus which joins the rest of the peninsula to the main island, Traigh Eais is located on the other side of it. Since the eastern beach (Traigh Mhòr) is sheltered from the ocean's fury, it is very flat and stretches quite far into a bay during low tide thanks to very shallow water. It is so flat and calm that in 1978 it was chosen as a perfect spot for an airport - the only beach airport in the world. All three airstrips are located on the actual beach and airplanes are landing (and starting) on the sand, which is sometimes wet enough to rise big sprays of water from under their wheels. Sadly, when we filmed, the tide was so low, that the sand was nearly completely dry and these picturesque sprays did not occurred. We've seen them when we visited this beach 3 years ago though. The airport is not only relatively quick connection with Scottish mainland for islanders, but mostly a great attraction for visitors. Since Barra is rather small island, you don't really need a car there. You can hop on the airplane in Glasgow and fly there enjoying unique landing experience, then rent a bike on the airport and spend few days exploring this amazing place. Of course, since the airport takes nearly all space on this beach, it is not particularly good for any other beach activities, however you can access it after they take the windsock down - you can also fly a drone after that time, I know because I asked 😁. There is no need to stay on that beach anyway, since Traigh Eais is located just 200 meters away, on the other side of the isthmus, behind a line of amazingly shaped dunes (possibly the highest in UK) covered with grass. This over a mile long beach is fully exposed to the ocean's waves, which are quite large, even during weak winds. That makes Barra a popular destination for surfers, but it is recommended to take care while swimming there due to strong currents. If braving the waves is not your thing, you can always visit Eoligary Sands, which is located half of the mile north from the airport and since it is also sheltered, it is the best option if you want to spend some quality time on the beach.
