It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 8 weeks and spent 4 weeks at the top of the UK Singles Chart. In 1984, the song was awarded two Grammy Awards: "Song of the Year" (Sting) and "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" (The Police). "Every Breath You Take" is ranked number 84 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
