How to set up a budget model planer thicknesser.
The generic budget planer thicknesser, as badged by the likes of Axminster, Perform, Kity, Elekra Beckum, etc. can produce good results if set up correctly. In this short video, I will demonstrate how I go through the setup of my Perform badged machine. Other models seem to have slight cosmetic differences, but the same adjustments.
The knife setting gauge I use came with the machine, however you can easily make your own - it just sets the knife height at approximately 3mm proud of the cutter block cylinder profile.
There are some additional tuning techniques for machines that have become badly aligned - usually due to the wrong bolts being slackened by users, or just poor setup at the factory. Also, the techniques employed when using the machine can affect the results. I will try and do videos to cover these in the near future.
