Sit back and enjoy 10 minutes of a Chicago tradition unlike any other, the dyeing of the Chicago River green, filmed from a news helicopter.
The Chicago River has been dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day since 1962, a tradition started by Stephen M. Bailey, the Plumbers Local 130 union business manager, to celebrate the holiday. The idea was inspired by a plumber whose white coveralls were stained green by a dye used to detect sewage leaks. The environmentally safe, secret formula is actually an orange powder, which turns green upon hitting the water.
Key Historical Details
Origin: The first official dyeing took place in 1962, though the discovery occurred in 1961 when looking for ways to track down pollution sources.
The "Discovery": Plumbers were using fluorescein dye to identify sewage pipes discharging into the river. Stephen Bailey thought it would be a festive way to celebrate.
Original Plan: Mayor Richard J. Daley initially wanted to dye part of Lake Michigan, but was convinced that dyeing the river was more manageable.
The Dye: Originally oil-based, it is now a food-grade, vegetable-based powder that is considered safe for the environment.
The Process: Each year, about 40 to 100 pounds of the orange powder is dispersed by motorboats run by the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local 130.
The Secret: The formula is a closely guarded secret, known only by the Union's leadership.
The tradition has become a major, long-standing, and highly anticipated annual event in Chicago.
