Chapter three reveals when the Y2K problem was first discovered. In 1958, programmer Bob Bemer realized that two digit years would fail when the calendar reached 2000. He spent twenty years trying to warn people. Almost nobody listened.
The assumption was always the same. Those old systems will be replaced by then. This code will not still be running in 2000. But the code kept running. And the warnings kept being ignored.
It was not until 1993, when Peter de Jager published his Doomsday 2000 article, that the world finally began to pay attention. By then, the deadline was less than seven years away. And the clock was ticking.
