STORYLINE
A strike in Pakistan's largest city Karachi on Friday brought businesses in the country's financial capital to a halt.
The strike was called by religious and political groups to protest against a wave of sectarian violence.
The strikers were also protesting against a recent killing of a top Sunni cleric who was killed in his car by a gunman.
On Friday, many streets were deserted and Karachi's main markets, shops and banks were closed.
Paramilitary troops were deployed across the city and schools remained closed as well.
"Business is badly affected, there is no trading during the strike. Today is also another strike and two days earlier there was also a strike," said Abdul Rasheed, a shop owner.
"Nobody knows whether he will return home safely or not. There is a very poor system of law and order in Karachi and only God knows what will happen," he added.
Karachi is a city of 18 (m) million people wracked by ethnic, political and sectarian violence.
Over two-thousand people were murdered last year in the city, located on Pakistan's southern coast.
The residents have witnessed scores of attacks against minority Shiites or majority Sunnis in recent years.
