4:47 AM. Earthquake. Our building cracked open and was declared uninhabitable.
My 5-year-old Ruby was in the parking lot wearing her fox pajamas.
I called my parents: "We just need a few days. Anywhere to sleep."
My mother said: "I don't think we have room."
My sister's kids were there. My brother's room was already made up for his weekend visit.
We went to a motel. Then a friend's couch.
A week later, my mother posted family dinner photos. Everyone there. Warm. Happy. No one called to check on us.
That's when I remembered: my name was on their house deed. A 25% share my grandfather left me.
I called a lawyer.
Two weeks later, my family bought me out at full market value. They didn't want an outside buyer forcing a partition sale.
It was enough for a down payment on our own house.
Ruby stood at her bedroom window and said: "This is our house. Forever?"
"Forever," I said.
