New York City - December 20, 2014: During a Black Lives Matter Protest where victims of police violence are remembered, Monica Dennis gives a powerful speech to remind everyone of the women leading the movement, and to indicate that all oppressed individuals (including cis-gendered women, transgendered and gender non-conforming) need support from the community.
Transcript:
[Not recorded: What are we going to take to our children?] Mama, papa, uncle, titi, what stand did you take? We want you to be on the right side of justice. Because if all lives mattered, we wouldn't have to say, "Black Lives Matter." I'll say it again: if all lives really mattered, we wouldn't have to say that black lives matter. There's an oppressive force in the way that criminal justice engages with black bodies since the time of enslavement. This is not new, but we are continuing...we are picking up the mantle of our forebears and our ancestors and we're moving forward, and this movement...when we say that "all" should be all black lives, not "all lives matter" but "all black lives"...Men and women, I want you to take a look at how many women are out here, standing up in the name of [the fight against] police brutality (crowd cheers). But that story goes untold! That story goes untold; we only see particular heterosexual male leadership, we only respond to when black men and black boys are killed, but the women are here to show you that we stand for you, but we also stand for ourselves (background: "Yeah!"). So we're calling on our brothers, we're calling on our nephews, we're calling on our neighbors, we're calling on the men and boys in our community. When Tanisha Anderson goes down, you stand with us (background: "Yes!"). When Marissa Alexander has to shoot a warning shot to save herself from her husband who was abusing her, we expect the men and the boys in our community (background: "YES!") to stand with us. (jubilant shouting) When Tarika Wilson, Aiyana Jones Stanley [correction: Aiyana Stanley Jones], Mother Eleanor Bumpurs, like this brother said, Alberta Spruill, gets murdered, we expect the brothers to show up in numbers with us. We got you, we need you to get us too! Yes, yes, yes...so when we're saying, "black lives matter", we're talking about all black lives; we're talking about cis-gendered, transgendered, non-gender conforming. All black lives matter, old and young! All black lives matter: undocumented, citizen, naturalized, living in the shadows: all black lives matter! All black lives matter! (cheering, chanting: "All black lives matter!"). All black lives matter! All black lives matter!
