Social Security earnings limit 2027: if you claim before full retirement age and keep working, Social Security holds back $1 for every $2 you earn over $25,560 ($1 for every $3 over $67,920 in the year you reach full retirement age). Real people who claimed early, a man with an overpayment letter, a 60 Minutes case, a former Social Security manager and planners show what counts, how checks stop, what to do when an overpayment letter arrives, and how the withheld money comes back.

BEFORE YOU FILE WHILE WORKING
1. Estimate this year's wages and compare them with $25,560 (or $67,920 in the year you reach full retirement age).
2. Run SSA's earnings test calculator (ssa.gov).
3. Tell Social Security the day a job or a raise starts.
4. Open every letter the day it comes: ask for a waiver or appeal within 30 days and collection waits.
5. Regret filing? You can withdraw within 12 months (Form SSA-521) by repaying what you received.
