Many older homes did not have ground wires in the outlets. These days, Building Code requires a ground within 6 feet of a water source. A GFCI acts as a ground to prevent shock hazards to people. A breaker switch prevents equipment overheating, a GFCI prevents shocks to people.
A GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) works by monitoring current on the hot and neutral wires. If it detects a small imbalance, meaning electricity is leaking through water or a person, it shuts the power off in milliseconds to prevent serious injury or electrocution.
