This winter drive begins in Silz, a peaceful village in Tyrol situated at 650 meters (2,132 ft) above sea level. With a temperature of 5°C (41°F) and a clear blue alpine sky overhead, Silz feels calm and fresh in January. The village lies along the wide floor of the Upper Inn Valley and is surrounded by impressive mountain scenery. To the south rise the rugged peaks of the Stubai Alps, while to the north the limestone walls of the Mieming Range dominate the skyline. The River Inn flows steadily nearby, guiding the route eastward.

The drive follows the historic Tiroler Straße, known as road 171 (B171), which runs parallel to the main motorway but offers a far more scenic and intimate experience through traditional villages and open valley landscapes. In winter, with snow resting on higher elevations and sunlight reflecting off the peaks, the valley appears bright and expansive beneath the crisp blue sky.

After just a few minutes, the route reaches Stams (02:40), a village famous for its magnificent Cistercian monastery, Stift Stams. The abbey’s twin towers and baroque architecture stand out beautifully against the mountain backdrop. Surrounding fields and meadows rest quietly in winter light, while the Mieming Range rises sharply above the settlement.

Continuing east, the road passes the small settlement of Thannrain (05:15), perched slightly above the valley floor on the Mieming Plateau. From here, the views open toward the broad Inn Valley and the snow-dusted peaks of the Stubai Alps across the river.

At 06:50, the drive reaches Rietz, a charming Tyrolean village known for its colorful houses and onion-domed church tower. The landscape here is flat and agricultural, framed by dramatic mountains on both sides. The clear January sky enhances the sharp contrast between white peaks and deep blue above.

Further along lies Telfs (11:28), one of the largest communities in the region. Telfs sits at the foot of the Hohe Munde, a striking twin-peaked mountain within the Mieming Range. The town blends traditional Tyrolean architecture with modern infrastructure, serving as an important local center. Despite its size, it remains surrounded by open alpine scenery.

Passing the smaller hamlet of Platten (17:25), the drive continues toward Pettnau (17:55), a quiet village nestled between the Inn River and forested slopes. The road remains smooth and scenic, with constant mountain views and wide skies.

At 24:55, the route crosses through Eigenhofen, a small rural settlement surrounded by farmland. The Inn Valley feels broad and open here, with the Karwendel mountains beginning to appear more prominently to the north.

Soon after, the drive reaches Zirl (27:35), dramatically positioned at the foot of steep limestone cliffs belonging to the Karwendel range. Zirl marks the western gateway to Innsbruck and offers impressive views of narrow rock faces rising sharply above the valley.

Approaching 36:40, the road passes Innsbruck Kranebitten, home to Innsbruck Airport and surrounded by towering alpine terrain. Aircraft land and take off with mountains immediately nearby, creating one of Europe’s most scenic airport settings.

Finally, at 38:40, the journey arrives in Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol. Nestled between the Karwendel mountains to the north and the Stubai Alps to the south, Innsbruck is one of the most spectacularly located cities in the Alps. Colorful historic buildings line the streets of the Old Town, while the famous Golden Roof reflects centuries of history. In winter, the surrounding peaks glow white under the clear blue sky, framing the city in dramatic alpine beauty.

This drive along road 171 from Silz to Innsbruck is a classic Inn Valley experience: wide river landscapes, traditional Tyrolean villages, baroque monasteries, and towering mountain ranges all under a brilliant January sky.
