First performed by Bach on September 5, 1733, in the afternoon, in the garden of Café Zimmermann, celebrating the 11th birthday of Crown Prince Friedrich of Saxony.
It's a moralising allegory, in which the young prince is admonished to follow the example of 'Hercules' at the crossroads, i.e. to resist the tempation of 'Wollust' (Pleasure, Lust) and instead follow (the path of) 'Tugend' (Virtue).
The music of the opening chorus, and of all the arias is reused (upcycled) by Bach in the Weihnachtsoratorium.
