There are plenty of photos of German soldiers using captured Allied weapons. The Soviet PPSh-41 was very popular among German soldiers. But did the Allies make use of captured German weapons? Like in the movie ‘Fury’ we see Brad Pitt with a German Sturmgewehr 44. The answer is ‘yes’. While not on the same scale as the Germans using captured Allied equipment, Allied soldiers and units did utilize German weapons when the situation called for it.
If a soldier's weapon was damaged, lost, or out of ammunition, they might use a German weapon found on the battlefield. Some German weapons, like the MG34 and MG42 machine guns, were highly regarded by Allied troops and were sometimes used as replacements or additions to their arsenal. Allied units, especially those facing shortages, sometimes re-equipped with captured German weapons, such as the light field howitzer and 88mm Flak guns.
The MP 40 submachine gun was sometimes used by Allied troops. The German Jerrycan for fuel and water was so well-designed that the Allies adopted it. Allied forces used captured German half-tracks, often refitted with their own machine guns. Some Allied units even used captured German tanks. In the Dutch city of Breda there is a tank on display nicknamed ‘the Polish tank’ which was used by Polish forces, but in reality this is a German Panther tank.
