Hi, I’m Usa-kun.
In the last video, I showed how I draw the line art of chibi.

In this video, I’m gonna show how I paint it in anime style digitally and tell you some tips quickly.
In this tutorial, I use ibis paintX, but you can do this using other digital tools too.

Let’s get started.


1.Base Color

When I do simple anime-style painting, I always draw under the line layer.
At first, I paint some base colors on each layer. (I separate layers by parts.)

At this time, I added some patterns to the clothes.
If you add material to the painted cloth layer and choose “clipping”, you can easily place it on the clothes. If you want to adjust the color to the base color, change the blending mode to “Overlay”.

You can erase the part you do not need too.
(I added a simple cheek using an airbrush.)


2.Shade and Shadow(except eyes)

Then I start painting shades and shadows except for the eyes. ( I usually paint details of eyes in the end.)
At this time, I create new layers and change the blending mode to multiply.
And then I pick the base color and paint on the layers.
(“Multiply” is one easy way to find the shade’s and shadow’s color.)

When I paint skin shadows or shades, I use a little bit more reddish color.
(It changes the image lighter.)


3.Highlights
Then I paint, highlights.
I pick the base colors and then change them close to white.


4.eyes
(I forgot to add the white area of eyes so I am painting now…)
Finally, I paint the eyes. The reason why I do it, in the end, is eyes are a kind of important part.

I create a new layer on the eyes’ base color layer and choose “Clipping”.
Using an airbrush, paint a little bit darker color on the upper area.
And I choose a darker color than the color and paint on the upper part again to create a simple gradient.
In the end, I paint a yellowish color in the lower part of the eyes.

That’s it. This way is one of my favorites, but not the only way.
