Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis
Definition: A long-term bacterial infection of the prostate gland, lasting for at least three months.
Symptoms: Painful urination, frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs), pelvic pain, and discomfort during ejaculation. Symptoms are often milder but persistent compared to acute prostatitis.
Causes: Often caused by bacteria such as E. coli or other organisms that cause UTIs.
Diagnosis: Includes medical history, physical examination (e.g., digital rectal exam), and urine culture.
Treatment: Prolonged antibiotic therapy is typically required. Pain management and lifestyle changes may also help.
Acute Bacterial Prostatitis
Definition: A sudden and severe bacterial infection of the prostate gland.
Symptoms: High fever, chills, severe pelvic pain, painful urination, difficulty urinating, and sometimes urinary retention.
Causes: Often caused by bacteria entering the prostate through the urethra, such as E. coli or Klebsiella.
Diagnosis: Based on symptoms, physical examination, and urine culture. Blood tests may also be used in severe cases.
Treatment: Requires immediate medical attention. Intravenous antibiotics are often used initially, followed by oral antibiotics. Supportive care, such as pain relief and hydration, is also important.
