"Loud Date and Domino" from "Mozart & More" violin duet book
by Aleksey Igudesman
This is perhaps the prime example of the simplicity and inherent
beauty in Mozart’s music. I took the music from Laudate Dominum
from Vesperae de confessore, originally for orchestra, soloist and
choir and tried to extract merely the essentials of its harmonies
and melodic lines.
As stunningly beautiful as the original is, this
bare-boned adaptation has something no less magical about it. If
Mozart were alive today, he would surely be writing some hit songs.

Why Mozart?
I guess there is little doubt that Mozart is one of the greatest
composers of all time. But is that a good enough reason to justify
taking some of his perfectly crafted, finest works, cutting them up,
shortening and disfiguring them to suit two meager violins?
The
answer is a loud and clear ‘yes’ and a ‘hallelujah’ to go with it.
Let me explain: Mozart’s music is often so clearly defined, pure and
sophisticatedly simple, that one is able to shorten it without losing its
essence.
At the same time it is often full of humour and quirkiness and
therefore prone to being treated with a certain amount of irreverence.
Wolfgang’s very own letters to his sister are so full of dirty little
secrets, that I felt no shame doing the unthinkable and minimizing
the often, already minimal, Mozart. The challenge was great and
that may be why I went for it. I tried to find a slightly different way
of going about it for every piece and, as you may have noticed, the
title of each is also somewhat altered.
My inspiration was Stravinsky’s ‘own’ Pulcinella Suite, a piece utterly
ripped off from the Baroque composer Pergolesi, yet ever so slightly
tweaked and changed, miraculously rendering it unmistakably
Stravinsky.
Whether the pieces in this book are unmistakably
‘Igudesman’ is for you to judge, but I am quite convinced that Mozart,
were he alive, would have had a laugh if he heard them... before he
sued me for copyright infringement!
I am quite aware that these pieces may well be played a lot ‘on the
street’, as a type of drug for street musicians and tourists in many
cities of the world. Young, and not so young violinists will be glad
to finally have a fun, short version of Eine kleine Nachtmusik, which
passers-by would hopefully devour, be somewhat delighted by, and
cough up hard cash to throw straight into the open violin cases. This
being said, I strongly believe that the drug of music is the healthiest
one of them all and I certainly encourage everyone to get addicted!
