A 53-year-old man was arrested after a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians. Emergency services took 27 people to hospital, two of whom sustained serious injuries.

In a statement, Merseyside Police confirmed the suspect is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.

“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight’s incident on Water Street in Liverpool city centre,” the statement reads.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision. We would ask people not to share distressing content online, but to send any footage or information directly to us @MerPolCC, or by calling 101 and quoting log 784.”

James highlights that the police’s decision to publish the suspect's ethnicity was likely an effort to prevent misinformation or unrest, referencing last year’s riots in Southport.

“We don’t worry about riots when it’s a white British man,” he says.

“I don’t think the average Joe appreciates how deep this terminal online far-right talking point has gone,” he adds.
