Yamaha’s Technical Director, Max Bartolini, confirmed that the V4 engine development is well underway. He further explained that the machine would eventually be tested by Yamaha’s official riders, depending on the progress made during the initial testing phases.
Bartolini emphasized that developing a completely new engine and matching chassis is a lengthy process. However, once the engineers are able to make a clear comparison between the existing inline-four and the new V4 setup, Yamaha will make quicker development strides. The decision marks a potential turning point for the Japanese manufacturer, who has long relied on their unique inline-four configuration in the modern MotoGP era.
Initially, Andrea Dovizioso was rumored to be Yamaha’s test rider for the new project, but an injury ruled him out. As a result, Augusto Fernandez was brought in to continue development duties. Fernandez’s involvement could be a strategic choice, considering his recent experience and familiarity with rival machinery.
