In this short video you can see the lengths we have to go sometimes to to try and eliminate the cause of rising damp. This very large Listed Building has had a long term rising damp problem, that has continued for many years. Previously the causes haven't been identified, and symptoms have been repaired, and subsequently failed. When you start at the beginning of any survey we need to try and eliminate things before coming to a conclusion. Drain surveys, aerial surveys, thermal imaging, data logging, plaster sampling following BRE DIGEST 245, and just understanding the potential damp causes are what I offer. If you own a property and have damp issues grab an umbrella when its hammering down and watch your building. Look for blocked gutters, blocked drains, any visible leaks and drips, and even pooling water on the ground. Take pictures to show your damp surveyor before he arrives as this will be very helpful.
