Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳傣族自治州), often shortened to Banna, is located in the extreme south of Yunnan Province, China, bordering Myanmar and Laos. The prefectural seat is Jinghong (景洪), the largest settlement in the area, which lies along the Mekong River, known as the "Lancang River" (澜沧江) in Chinese. This region is distinguished by the unique culture of its ethnic groups, which is markedly different from that of the Han Chinese, with influences more closely related to the Shan, Dai, and Tai peoples, including the Thai and Lao.
The name "Xishuangbanna" is derived from the Tai Lü language, meaning "twelve thousand rice paddies," reflecting the area's traditional division into twelve districts. Historically, before 1886, it was known as Chiang Hung, a Tai Lue Kingdom, and has seen influence from China, Lanna (Thailand), and Burma over the centuries. Following the Mongol conquest in 1296, the region was under the joint domination of the Burmese and Chinese, and it briefly became a tributary state of other regional powers before becoming part of British India in 1886. After the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, it eventually became part of the newly established Republic of China.
Xishuangbanna was declared an autonomous prefecture in 1953, ending the native-chieftain system and establishing a new governance model that emphasized equality between Han and Dai people. The region is known for its biodiversity, including the last few Asian elephants in China, and its rich cultural heritage, including the Dai New Year, known as the Water-Splashing Festival. The area is also a significant producer of Pu-erh tea, one of the most highly regarded teas in the world.
The prefecture covers an area of 19,700 km² and had a population of 1,133,515 in 2010. It includes one county-level city, Jinghong, and two counties: Menghai (勐海县) and Mengla (勐腊县). Xishuangbanna's climate is humid subtropical, bordering on a tropical savanna climate, making it a unique ecological and cultural destination within China.
