The Shiite Moslem fundamentalist Hezbollah went into a final showdown with tribal chiefs in eastern Lebanon on Sunday (14/6) in the fourth and last phase of the country's first municipal elections in 35 years.
While Hezbollah seeks to appease fears with its "List of National Coexistence," Baalbek's powerful tribal chiefs formed a rival coalition ticket with several parties including Hezbollah's Shiite arch-rival, the Amal. The main clans in Baalbek, traditionally driven by strong family affiliations and ardent tribalism, want to soften the region's
image and win back tourists to its ancient Roman monuments.
