The date palm is an erect tree which reachs 100 or 120 feet (30.5-36.5 m) high, the trunk covered with overlapping persistent woody base or cut fallen leaves pointing upward. After the first 6 to 16 years,there are numerous outbreaks around the base of the trunk.
The flowers of these palms are fragrant, small (white females, the waxy cream colored male), born in unespádice branched 25-150 divided into strings of 12-30 inches (30-75 cm) long in the female plants, and only 6 to 9 inches (15 -22.5 cm) long in the male plants. A large inflorescence can be between 6,000 and 10,000 flowers. Some palms can have strings with male and female flowers, and others may have perfect flowers. During fruit development, the stem that supports the cluster can be extended 6 feet (1.8 m), while bending by the weight of the fruit.
The fruit is oblong, 1-3 inches (2.5-7.5 cm) long, dark brown, reddish brown or yellow when ripe,(there are several varieties) with thin skin, sweet flesh (astringent until ripe) and a core cilídrico, elongated and grooved stone aside.
