Join us for an engaging talk with Dr. Daniel Swain on California’s climate and extreme weather events.
As global temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s capacity to hold water vapor increases rapidly. This “expanding atmospheric sponge” raises the ceiling on how intense precipitation can become, yielding ever-heavier downpours, and accelerating the rate at which intense evaporation can dry out landscapes. Together, this gives rise to increasing variability, or “whiplash,” in the Earth’s water cycle – heightening the risk of floods, droughts, and wildfires. Remarkably, these opposite tendencies arise from the same underlying physical process in the water cycle.
Learn about the science surrounding hydroclimate whiplash and climate change, and how our recent experience in California offers a preview of the challenges (but also opportunities) of an increasingly variable hydroclimate.
