Professor
DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
Matthew Sullivan is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geodetic Engineering. He has pioneered viral ecogenomics as a means to study viruses in complex communities. In the oceans, Sullivan has vastly expanded understanding of the global virosphere, established automatable approaches to viral classification, and elucidated how ‘wild’ viruses evolve and impact the planet’s photosystems. He has adapted these toolkits for use in extreme environments, soils and humans. He is co-founder of the UA Ecosystem Genomics Institute and co-director of Ohio State’s Infectious Disease Institute Microbial Communities Program. He is a Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Investigator, a Kavli Fellow and a Beckman Mentor. Dr. Sullivan received his BS in marine science from Long Island State University, his MPhil in biology from Queens University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK, and his PhD in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
