The RC-500 replaced the RC-30 nearly a decade after it launched, and it's a genuine leap: 32-bit processing with unlimited uncompressed overdubs, a redesigned menu split into proper categories instead of one endless list, and a new track-select footswitch that finally makes switching between the two loop tracks a single press rather than a hold-and-pray shortcut.

The audio routing is the headline. You can send a specific input to a specific loop track, and send each loop track out of a specific output so a front-of-house engineer can have an individual feed per track. No BOSS looper before this could do that.

Two real criticisms. There's no instrument-in level anywhere, not even buried in a menu, so you're relying on your guitar's own preamp. And there's no headphone out which means if you want a click track or the onboard rhythm in your ears, you have to sacrifice one of your two main outputs and run the whole pedal in mono. Every performance video I made with this pedal was mono for that reason.
