“A world disorder”: European leaders call for increased defence spending amid geopolitical shift

At the Munich Security Conference Friday different European leaders stressed the necessity for NATO members within the continent to do more for their own conventional defence. With the war in Ukraine approaching its fourth year, and an increasingly isolationist United States, many countries are taking action and encouraging others to do the same.
“It’s now time for Europe to do what is necessary for us to protect our own continent, but also to win. The world order that has been built up since the Second World War, which has been incredibly good also for a small country like Denmark, that's gone now. Now it is a 'world disorder,' and it'll be more about survival of the fittest,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said.
"This burden-sharing is long overdue. In recent years, Europeans have done too little for their own conventional defence. We are now making up for that," German defence minister Boris Pistorius said. "This burden-sharing stabilises the alliance. Or, to put it in my favourite phrase, NATO must become more European so that it can remain transatlantic," he added.
