STORYLINE:
Thousands of colorfully dressed dancers and musicians kicked off Carnival celebrations in the Bolivian city of Oruro on Saturday.

One of Latin America's most famous events features dancers in traditional costumes and musicians who parade through the city's streets.

The carnival dates back to pre-Columbian times and is deeply rooted in indigenous Andean traditions and Catholic influences.

Dancers take to the streets in stunning, elaborate costumes combining traditional Andean attire and religious symbolism.

The costumes, often adorned with feathers, sequins, and intricate beadwork, represent various folkloric themes and local legends.

One of the most iconic groups participating in the parade is the "Diablada" dancers, who wear devil-inspired masks and costumes and symbolize the struggle between good and evil.

Almost everyone in Oruro, a former mining center in western Bolivia, has a role, as dancer, musician, dressmaker or make-up artist in the massive parade.

The events, which attract hundreds of visitors to Bolivia, last throughout the weekend and have been designated in 2001 as UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
