What an amazing morning as we begin hiking to Virgin Falls. It had rained the last few days so we thought the water flow would be spectacular and was it ever......
We begin this journey from the trailhead in Sparta, Tennessee. We crossed over a could small wooden bridges then a larger creek that had a cable to hang onto while stepping over on the larger rocks.
We thought we'd take a detour and go visit Marthas Pretty Point and I'm so glad that we did. The dramatic view of Scott's Gulf and the Caney Fork River over 900 feet below us made the hike up there worth the views.
We hiked back down to the trail that leads to Virgin Falls but first, we came upon Big Branch Falls. This was a great little cascade with a pretty good-sized cave on the other side of the creek.
We followed the trail on towards Virgin Falls following a good-sized creek. We reached a point on the trail where there wasn't any creek just an empty creek bed. So we hiked back up a little way and found that the creek that we had been following for a mile or so had just disappeared into a hole or underground cave.
We continued hiking then we hiked upon Big Laurel Falls, this waterfall was amazing. As it was incaved and as before the water falls from the top and it just disappears somewhere back behind the waterfall. Simply amazing.
Then to the Sheep Cave and wow even more waterfalls into caves. This was a pretty waterfall as well. At the very top of the falls around the corner to the left is Sheep Cave. We went into the cave just a little way. Due to the White Nose Syndrome, all caves in this area or closed to recreational use.
Then to the finale. VIRGIN FALLS! This body of water falling was breathtaking and something totally amazing. This very well-known and unique waterfall emerges from an underground stream on the south side of Little Chestnut Mountain and drops 110 feet and vanishes underground again. The water source for this waterfall is Virgin Falls Cave.
