I built a custom-designed, upholstered storage ottoman to match the sofa bed in our guest room.
It has a reversible top that lets it be used as both a footrest and a coffee table. The top flips over to reveal a wood tray with a lip to prevent items from sliding off the edge of the tray.
For the feet, I used 4x4 posts and 1x4 lumber was used for the sides. For the tray, I used 11/32" thick plywood for the piece that goes inside the cushion cover, and the base of the tray, and strips cut from 1x6 primed boards for the lip of the tray.
