Dogs 101 - CANAAN - Top Dog Facts About the CANAAN
The Canaan Dog is an ancient breed of hardy dogs, believed to have been around for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, originating in the Biblical region of Canaan – the area around modern-day Israel. Used by the region’s original settlers as a multi-purpose breed, it turned feral as these people dispersed to other lands. Some local Bedouin tribes that remained would sometimes train wild puppies to be guard dogs or livestock herders. In the 1930s, before Israel was formally recognized, Jewish paramilitary forces under British rule looking to set up a dog section found the usual imports from Europe and the US ill-suited for the harsh conditions of the region. So, an animal behavior expert, Dr Rudolphina Menzel decided to use the semi-wild dogs available in plenty for this purpose. It took her a very short time to domesticate and train them for use in military or as home pets, and began a rearing program to create a standard breed. The breed’s import into the US began in the 1960s, but it took some time to get noticed because of its very simple appearance.

The adult male Canaan Dog has a height between 20 and 24 inches, and weight between 45 and 55 pounds. The female has a height between 19 and 23 inches, and weight between 35 and 45 pounds. The dog has a double coat – the upper coat is harsh and of medium length, the under coat is soft and shorter. The muzzle is tapering, giving an overall wedge shape to its head. The tapering erect ears move according to the mood of the dog. Colors seen are shades of black, cream, golden, liver, red, tan and white, along with some markings of these colors.
Grooming: Brushing once or twice a week, and an occasional bath, should take care of the dog’s coat. The breed typically sheds once a year, when brushing may need to be more frequent. Nail trimming, teeth brushing and ear cleaning need to be regular.
Environment: As an acknowledgement of its wild origins, the Canaan Dog can be very territorial and vocal. It is a naturally inquisitive dog, generally mistrustful of new surroundings and strangers. This makes it a very good watchdog. It is not an aggressive dog, makes for a good family companion, and is protective of the family’s children.
Training: The Canaan Dog’s history of being turned into an all-purpose dog from a feral one is a proof of its high intelligence. It can be obedience trained quite easily, despite an independent strain and easy boredom with repetition. Daily exercise is absolutely important, which can be a long walk on leash or a good game of fetch.
Health: The typical life span of the Canaan Dog is 12 to 13 years. It is not known to have any major inherited diseases, but some ailments observed are hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, dislocated kneecap, epilepsy and retinal atrophy. Obesity can be an issue if the dog does not get regular exercise.
One of the oldest breeds of dog known to man, the Canaan Dog is sharp, graceful, loyal and loving. It is easy to take care of, is generally healthy and can do well in weather extremes. So, if you live in an apartment or on a farm, if in doubt, choosing a Canaan is probably the easiest bet.
