Strategy and Sim games huh. They're complicated. To play, make, market, etc. Why do modern strategy games keep struggling? Why do "civ-like games" or "civ-killers" fail to gain real momentum? What are some of the common problems we've seen time and time again when 4X, historical strategy games hit the market? In this video I'm going to talk about Paradox Interactive's Millennia game, but I'll also draw on their publishing more broadly (Cities Skylines 2, Prison Architect 2, and the list goes on). I'll also look at a myriad of 4X historical strategy games that I've covered over the last five years. From classics like Civilization 5 and Civ 6, through to games that took a risk, or focused on a niche within the niche. Titles like Humankind, Old World, Ara: History Untold, and many more.
