90 Minutes is an interesting little football game that was developed by Smilebit and released by Sega themselves exclusively for the European market in October 2001.
The most interesting aspect about this game is the developer - Smilebit. Smilebit is more known by their earlier name AM6 - the developer behind the complete Panzer Dragoon series on the Sega Saturn. In 1998 AM6 changed their name to Smilebit and went on to develop such gems as Jet Set Radio (including Future), GunValkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta for the Xbox and the Let's Make a series. In 2004 they merged with Sega completely and is today known as Sega Sports Japan and has mainly developed the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series.
90 Minutes feature over 32 national teams, as well as club teams from major leagues across Europe. The choice of club teams are from the English, French, German, Italian and Spanish leagues. You can also play the for the World Championship (based on the World Cup) or compete in a Domestic League competition.
Noteworthy is also that the British television and radio commentator Alan Parry is the in-game commentator.
90 Minutes is the first and last in the series. Maybe because it was released at the same time that the Dreamcast was discontinued, or maybe because it is just an ok football game. Even though Smilebit is undoubtedly a very talented, there are better football games from this time period.
But it controls nicely, and the roster is impressive.
