1. INTRODUCTION 00:08

Giant ionic structure happens in ionic compounds. In ionic bonding, metal atom lose electron and non-metal atom gains electron. The classic example of ionic compound is sodium chloride. Sodium will lose electron and chlorine will gain electron. Sodium Chloride is also known as table salt and has giant ionic lattice structure.

In lattice arrangement, the + ions is surrounded by - ions and vice versa. Sodium chloride has cubic shape and has giant ionic lattice arrangement.

3. PROPERTIES 01:41

It has high melting and boiling point. This is because there are many strong ionic bonds and so large amount of heat energy is needed to break those bonds.

It is soluble in water. The water molecules can break the ionic bond and the water molecules surround the ions and prevent the ions forming into ionic bond.

Can it conduct electricity? It can only conduct electricity when found in the liquid form, this can be done by dissolving in water or by melting the ionic compound. When it is a liquid form, the ions are free to move around so it can conduct electricity. When it is in a solid state, the ions are fixed in place so the ions cannot move around so it cannot conduct electricity.
