The CAGED system is usually taught as a way to map the fretboard and stay inside a single key. In this video, I take a different approach and show how the same CAGED shapes can be pieced together to create more colorful, modern sounds.
We start in the key of D and connect the I, IV, and V using simple arpeggio shapes instead of full chord grips. By focusing mostly on root, third, and fifth-and occasionally adding the second for color — we can create angular lines that feel melodic rather than scale-based.
From there, I take the same idea and move it into a second key without changing the way I’m thinking about shapes. The harmony shifts, but the fretboard logic stays the same. This is less about theory rules and more about letting familiar shapes create motion and tension naturally.
This isn’t a note-for-note lesson. It’s a creative concept you can steal and apply anywhere on the neck if you already have some familiarity with chord tones and CAGED shapes.
If you want a deeper breakdown of chord tones and how these shapes are built, I’ve linked a few related videos below.
