In this video I'll be demonstrating another great patch from the Yamaha SY85 from 1992. 'ST Mixed' is a patch built in performance mode, which allows up to four individual voice patches to be combined, resulting in a richer and more expressive sound.
ST Mixed consists of three elements: A, B, and C, while element D remains unused. Elements A and B are both derived from the voice 'ST Syn 1', which uses waveform no. 220; 'AnlgSaw1' as its sound source. Element C comes from the voice 'SP Strg' which is based on waveform no. 127; Pad 1Lp. This waveform is essentially the same as 'Pad 1', but with a low-pass filter applied that removes some of the higher frequencies, giving the sound a softer, darker character.
Elements A and B have a slightly lower output level than element C, but together produce an overall volume that matches C’s output. Elements A and B are fully panned to the left, while element C is panned entirely to the right, creating a wider stereo image for both the player and listener. All three elements have been subtly fine-tuned to introduce gentle variations in pitch, adding the character of analog synthesis to the sound. The SY85 runs solely on the AWM2 engine, making it a fully digital synthesizer, and a perfectly stable pitch is the mark of a flawless digital machine, whereas analog instruments always had a certain degree of instability.
In the final output stage of the SY85, all elements are processed through parallel effects, including a reverb and chorus. The SY85’s excellent built-in effects remain among the finest of the early 1990s, as I have pointed out in previous blog posts.
