Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were down and nearly out. They were one minute away from the first loss of the Messi era. And Messi had his opponent right where he wanted them.
Messi’s left boot found Leo Campana for his second header goal of the game to force extra time, and Inter Miami outdueled FC Cincinnati 5-4 in penalty kicks to win their U.S. Open Cup semifinal on Wednesday night.
Josef Martinez scored three minutes into extra time to give Inter Miami its first lead of the game at 3-2. But Yuya Kubo scored in the 113rd minute to send it to penalty kicks. Nick Hagglund missed Cincinnati’s final kick, while 18-year-old Miami native and Argentina national Benjamin Cremaschi clinched the victory for Inter Miami.
“We’re living a dream and killing it,” Cremaschi said after the game while interviewed on CBS’ Golazo network.
Cincinnati, the best team in the MLS, was one minute away from being the first club to hand Messi and Inter Miami their first defeat in eight games. Cincy fans at TQL Stadium had even already begun celebrating. Instead, Inter Miami moves on to the Open Cup final – their second final in eight games with Messi.
Inter Miami improves to 8-0 in the Messi era, with this being the second-straight game and third victory to be decided by penalty kicks. Inter Miami outlasted Nashville SC 10-9 in PKs to win the Leagues Cup final last Saturday.
Messi was held scoreless for the first time with Inter Miami, but he was still able to make his impact felt loudly in this match, assisting on both of Campana’s goals during the first 90 minutes.
