On 6th September 2025, three iconic steam locomotives – 7029 Clun Castle, 45596 Bahamas, and 5029 Nunney Castle – put on a spectacular show of steam and power as they tackled the legendary South Devon Banks. This video captures 5 epic shots and 1 dramatic shot of these historic locomotives working hard against the gradients, offering a rare chance to see these machines in full cry.
7029 Clun Castle & 45596 Bahamas – The Mayflower
On this day, 7029 Clun Castle, a member of the Great Western Railway’s famous Castle Class, joined forces with the LMS Jubilee Class 45596 Bahamas to haul the Mayflower railtour. Double headed steam across Devon is a rare treat, and these two locomotives produced an unforgettable spectacle as they stormed the climbs of Whiteball Bank, Rattery Bank and Hemerdon Bank , on their way to and from Plymouth. Both locomotives showed off their unique character: Clun Castle’s sharp exhaust beats combining beautifully with the deep bark of Bahamas as they fought hard on one of the toughest stretches of mainline railway in the UK.
5029 Nunney Castle – The English Riviera Express
Also in action was 5029 Nunney Castle, another of the celebrated GWR Castle Class locomotives. Nunney Castle was entrusted with the English Riviera Express, taking passengers in style down through Devon to Kingswear. The locomotive can be seen roaring up Whiteball Bank in both directions putting on a great display with her distinctive bark making it a spectacular sight. 5029 reminded everyone why the Castle Class has such a legendary reputation. Watching this locomotive thunder through the countryside up steep hills hauling a prestigious train was a sight to behold.
The Challenge of the Devon Banks
The South Devon Banks are renowned in British railway history for their demanding gradients. With Hemerdon Bank, Dainton Bank, and Rattery Bank all testing locomotive power and crew skill, it is a rare privilege to witness three preserved steam locomotives taking on these climbs in a single day. The sight and sound of these locomotives working flat out is one of the most dramatic experiences the modern-day mainline can offer.
This was an unforgettable day of mainline steam in the West Country, and a reminder of why locomotives like Clun Castle, Bahamas, and Nunney Castle hold such a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts like myself.
If you enjoy mainline steam action, rare double-headers, and the drama of locomotives tackling legendary climbs, this is a video not to be missed. I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to leave a like, comment and susbcribe for more steam action from Full Steam Ahead.
