The Hidden Reason Why You Can’t Eat or Drink on MRT Trains and Buses

Most Singaporeans know you can’t eat or drink on MRT trains or public buses, but did you know the rules are not actually the same for both? The restriction started in 1987 when the MRT began operations. It wasn’t just a guideline by SMRT; it’s an actual law. Under the Rapid Transit Systems Regulations, Regulation 14 specifically prohibits eating or drinking on MRT trains, with offenders facing a penalty of up to $500. Even drinking plain water is considered an offence, though you can pay a lower amount if you accept a compound fine, just like with littering.

The law exists mainly to keep the trains and stations clean and safe: no one wants spilled drinks, wet seats, or someone slipping on a puddle. But the interesting twist is that this law only applies to MRT trains. Buses don’t fall under the same statutory law. While you might see similar notices onboard buses, there’s usually no mention of a fine. This is because there's no official legislation banning food or drinks on public buses, just internal guidelines set by operators.

However, this is changing. Since March this year, a new document called the Conditions of Carriage for Public Buses in Singapore was introduced. It works like a contract between you and the bus company: by boarding the bus, you agree to follow its rules. This gives bus drivers more authority, like removing passengers who make too much noise or create a nuisance; yes, even that uncle blasting Wang Lei’s livestream on full volume. So while it’s not a legal fine, you can still get kicked off for not following these "contractual" rules.

Looking ahead, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is working on creating a proper regulatory framework for public buses, with more updates expected in the first half of 2026. This might include actual laws instead of just company guidelines.
