Today we will be exploring Port Barton and doing a private boat tour to various surrounding islands and snorkel spots.
Port Barton is a small fishing village on the northwest side of the island of Palawan. It has been gaining popularity in the past couple of years. Most of the roads in town are still dirt but there are guesthouses going up everywhere. We read that a couple of years ago they didn’t have 24 hour electricity here but that has changed recently.. there are now also several ATMs, a lot of great restaurant options, and even a brand new road that makes it a lot easier to get here from Puerto Princesa.
It seems like the tourism wave is on it's way but for now, it is still pretty quiet. Yesterday we just hung out at the beach when we got in and shared it with maybe a few dozen other people.
Today we are going to be taking an island hopping boat tour. There are guys lined up at the beach trying to sell an A, B, C, or D tour or some combination of the 4 options. The tours include a full day out on the boat, hopping around to different islands and snorkel spots. We talked to several boat captains yesterday and it seems like all the prices are pretty fixed. It costs 1,200 pesos per person to join in on a group tour and that can have up to 12-15 people on the boat.. or it costs 5,000 pesos total to rent the boat privately which is what we’re doing today.

After breakfast, we meet our boat captain and head out around 8:00 AM. The water is as smooth as glass as we make our way out of Port Barton. It takes us around 30 minutes to get to our first stop at Inaladelan Island.
We are the first ones here so we have the island all to ourselves. While it is nice to be the only ones here, it actually seems like it would be a fun place with a crowd because there is a bar, volleyball court and a lot of hammocks and chairs set up.
There also happens to be a snorkel spot just off the island known as "Turtle spot." Apparently there is a resident turtle in this area and he is quite the popular guy. We are able to find him pretty quickly but there are a lot of people snorkeling all around so feeling a bit bad, we leave the turtle alone and continue on our way. We head to a different, quieter spot for snorkeling and spot yet another turtle along with many fish and a couple jellyfish.
From here we stop at a secluded island for lunch and again, we have the place all to ourselves. Our boat captain has brought chicken and fresh fish to grill over an open fire right on the rocks. There just so happens to be a boat nearby the island with a few locals squid fishing. Our boat captain calls them over to see what they have caught and buys a few squid to include with our lunch. After an hour or so of hanging out on the beach, our barbecue lunch is ready and we enjoy a delicious feast on the boat.
After lunch we head to one final snorkel spot at Twin Reef and they definitely have saved the best for last. This is a popular spot but for good reason. The coral is beautiful and there are so many colorful fish. We snorkel around for about 30 minutes and head back to the boat. We head to our last stop of the day which is a small sandbar island near Port Barton.
After a long and very full day out on the water, we make it back to Port Barton and enjoy a beautiful sunset and a couple beers. It is the perfect way to end such a great day here!
