Samarkand is one of the most famous historical cities in Uzbekistan. The caravans of the Great Silk Road used to pass through here. Samarkand was the capital of the empire of Amir Timur (Tamerlane). Timur's grandson, Ulugbek, made the city the center of the scientific and cultural life of the East. Architectural monuments of the Middle Ages have been preserved here, many of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Today, Samarkand is a city that combines the ancient traditions of the East and modernity. It is the third largest city in Uzbekistan, with more than half a million people living here.
