Welcome to Electro Revolution! In this episode, I take the BYD Atto 1 out for a real-world test drive in Australia, focusing purely on the driving experience. This video is a continuation of Episode 1, where we covered the exterior, interior, boot space, and key design details—so if you haven’t watched that yet, I recommend starting there.
In this hands-on drive review, I break down how the BYD Atto 1 performs in everyday conditions, including city and suburban driving, tight manoeuvres, and stop-start traffic. We look closely at accelerator response, braking feel, and how the car behaves across Normal, Eco, and Sport drive modes. As you’d expect from an EV, throttle response is instant, but there are clear differences between modes that impact both performance and efficiency.
I also cover steering weight and feedback, suspension comfort over imperfect roads, cabin noise levels, and BYD’s impressively tight turning circle, which makes this car ideal for urban environments. You’ll see how features like auto hold, push-button start, reversing camera quality, and parking behaviour work in practice.
Safety and tech are a big focus too. I discuss the driver monitoring / drowsiness detection system, how intrusive it can feel, and why it’s required for the car’s 5-star ANCAP rating. We also touch on instrument cluster visibility, stalk layout (blinkers and wipers), and why BYD’s traditional stalk setup works well for Australian drivers.
On the usability side, I explain how BYD voice commands, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay (wired and wireless) reduce the need to interact with the screen while driving. Charging is covered briefly, including the AC and DC charging ports, plus differences between the Essential and Premium trims—why I’d personally choose the Premium, and whether it’s worth the small price jump.
With a WLTP range of around 320 km (real-world ~270–280 km), the BYD Atto 1 clearly targets budget-conscious buyers needing a practical EV for daily use. At roughly $31,000 AUD drive-away in NSW, it’s currently Australia’s cheapest battery electric vehicle, making it a compelling option for first-time EV buyers or as a car for young drivers.
If you’re considering the BYD Atto 1, this video will give you a clear, honest perspective on how it actually drives day to day.
